His name is associated primarily with the Queen group, whose frontman was Freddie Mercury. Brian May also has solo albums such as “Back To The Light” released in 1993.
Brian May was born in 1947 in Hampton. From an early age, he was interested in music – he learned to play the piano and ukulele. Brian received his first guitar on the occasion of his 17th birthday, and soon after he formed his first band – 1984.
After studying at Imperial College (physics and astronomy), together with his friends Roger Taylor and Tim Staffel, he created the formation Smile. Soon the musicians signed a contract with Mercury Records, but despite this chance, they managed to release only one single – “Earth”.
Tim Staffel left the group, but fortunately, his friend Freddie Mercury appeared, as it turned out later, endowed with a wonderful voice and extraordinary charisma of the singer with whom May, Taylor and John Deacon formed one of the most important bands in the history of rock – Queen.
The musicians have achieved worldwide success, recording such albums as “A Night At The Opera”, “News of the World”, “A Kind Of Magic” and “Innuendo”. Queen songs, among which the most famous are “Bohemian Rapsody”, “Who Wants To Live Forever”, “We Are The Champions” and “We Will Rock You” have become megahits. After the death of Freddie in 1991, each of the musicians engaged in a solo career, and the last album Queen with Mercury “Made In Heaven” was released in 1995.
Brian May’s solo projects include the “Star Fleet Project” and “Live At The Brixton Academy” released in 1983 (1994). The first of them was preceded by the single “Driven by You”, and after the release of “Back to the …” May went on the first solo tour with the band, which included: Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, Spike Edney, Jamie Moses, Shelley Preston and Cathy Porter.
Brian May released his last studio album, “Another World” in 1998, in addition to composing film and theater music, astronomy and also writing a book on photography by T. R. Williams.
