Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond
For Pink Floyd, it all began in 1965, when three students of the London University of Technology’s architecture faculty: Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright wanted to become rock stars. Fascinated with the achievements of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Cream, they believed that they could offer listeners the kind of music they have never encountered before.
Soon guitarist and composer Syd Barrett joined the group, who initially dominated the group’s activities. He also came up with the final name of the formation. He combined the names of two American bluesmen – Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Pink Floyd.
Initially, the musicians decided to create under the name Pink Floyd Sound, but the name was soon shortened and already as Pink Floyd, the band gave their first concert, at the legendary club Marqee.
News of the new formation reached EMI Music and resulted in the single “Arnold Layne” released in March 1967. Then the composition of the group crystallized: Syd Barrett – guitar, Roger Waters – bass, Nick Mason – drums and Rick Wright – keyboards.
Together they began recording the debut album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. The album was a perfect reflection of Pink Floyd’s musical ambitions. Disturbing, mysterious, full of sound effects, instrumental collage.
The following years brought removal from Syd’s group, which had serious problems with drug addiction, and thus prevented the team from continuing their activities. Salvation then turned out to be a young, extremely talented guitarist – David Gilmour.
I love Gilmour! He just grabs you by the heartstrings and pulls til the tears pour like a waterfall and your just floating on a cloud of beautiful sound.
