Sweet - Fox On The Run

Sweet

Sweet (originally The Sweet) is a British rock music band, one of the main glam rock bands existing in the 1970s, with the original line-up consisting of Brian Connolly, Steve Priest, Frank Torpey, and Mick Tucker. Torpey was later replaced by Mick Stewart and then in August 1970 by the definitive Andy Scott.

During the first years between 1971 and 1972, Sweet’s musical style followed a marked progression from the style of The Archies (known as Bubblegum or bubblegum pop) – such is the case of his first hit, “Funny Funny” – to evolve to a style of The Who, influenced by heavy rock complemented by a surprising use of sharp backing vocals.

The band achieved notable success on the UK charts with thirteen top 20 hits during the 1970s, five reaching number 2 as the now-classic and legendary “The Ballroom Blitz” and “Block Buster! ”. the only one to reach the Top 1 in the UK. In the United States, their success was somewhat less, although they had very successful tours in that country. There they had four Top 10 Billboard hits. However, the country where they were most successful was Germany (considered their second home), with fifteen Top 10 hits, eight of them at the top of the charts.

The members of Sweet went through a number of changes during different periods. Scott, Connolly, and Priest also formed their own “Sweet”, resulting in separate bands Sweet Steve Priest, Sweet Andy Scott, and BC Sweet. This was motivated because there was never a real legal fight for the rights and exclusivity of the use of the original name, given that each one used it in a different way, even when they interpreted the same hits on their own.

Connolly died on February 9, 1997, after long and successive heart and liver diseases (a situation that significantly reduced his solo career), Tucker on February 14, 2002, due to leukemia, and Priest on June 4, 2020. Andy Scott is the only member still active with his own band.
